Graduated Return to Work Programs

Graduated return to work programs allow a rehabilitating worker to use work as part of their recovery process. The key to this is getting the mix of working hours and working duties correct. Typically, a return to work program is structured to limit a rehabilitating employee’s exposure to particular tasks and loads, but allow them to engage in work duties that are compatible with the current point in their recovery and assist them to progress their recovery. As the worker continues to improve, the relevant demands of the duties performed by the worker and the working hours performed by the worker increase, considering the rehabilitation progression.  Consideration is given to the demands of pre-injury duties, restricted duties or alternative duties available, the stage in the rehabilitation process that the worker is at, and the treatment requirements of the worker at a particular stage of his or her rehabilitation. The return to work program uses the information gathered during the Worksite Assessment to select and grade duties, then is developed in conjunction with treating medical practitioners, treating allied health professionals, the employer and the rehabilitating worker to structure a program that offers the safest and most efficient recovery avenue for the worker. Programs are constantly monitored and adjusted as required to meet the dynamic needs of a rehabilitating worker or workplace.

Graduated return to work programs can be requested as a 'single service' only, or used as part of a comprehensive workplace rehabilitation service.
